10% Povidone-iodine Solution
A 10% povidone-iodine solution is recommended for removing bacteria from the skin around the wound site, and it can be diluted to a less than 1% povidone-iodine solution for flushing and packing high-risk wounds, cleansing a high-risk wound bed, or saturating a gauze dressing to treat or prevent a local infection. A 10% solution can also be used to purify water for drinking; use 4-6 drops per liter and wait 30 minutes. Filter dirty water before treating. Wait one hour if the water is cold. We package a 10% PI solution into Nalgene 1/2-, one-, or two-ounce narrow mouth or dropper bottles. The one- and two-ounce bottles fit into the medium 4-loop velcro strips; the half ounce bottles fit into the small 6-loop velcro strips. The velcro strips inside all of our first aid packs are specifically designed to fit Nalgene containers. Dropper lids are also an option for each of the sizes above.
