About WAFA Courses

Our Wilderness Advanced First Aid course is designed for people taking half-, full, or short multi-day trips, those traveling with reliable cell or satellite coverage, and where outside assistance may be delayed for several hours. WAFA courses cover more topics and skills than our WFA course and dive slightly deeper into anatomy, physiology, and  pathophysiology. ​
While WAFA courses do dive deeper into each topic, many WAFA graduates return to take a more advanced course to go more in-depth and get more hands-on practice.

AED certification is an option that may be available depending on the course - see the details page for each course for more.

Our WAFA certification exceeds WMEC certification standards endorsed by the WMS.

​WMTC WAFA certifications are valid for a maximum of three years; there is no grace period. To recertify, you must complete another WAFA course. Or, WMTC WAFA graduates can register as a WAFA Recert student for a hybrid WMTC wilderness first aid (WFA) course and will receive access to the hybrid WAFA website and online tests prior to the In-person Session.

Registering for the Online Module only

​We recommend taking an entire hybrid course whenever possible. There may, however, be some cases when it makes sense to register for and begin the Online Module before or without registering for the In-person Session: 
  • You'd like to get started on the Online Module and there are not currently any In-person Sessions that fit your schedule.
  • You have time to complete the Online Module now, and may not have time later. 
  • You are interested in the education contained in the Online Module and don't need certification.  
While you may register for the Online Module only now, you will need to register for and complete an In-person Session within one year of registering for the Online Module to receive certification.
