The Wilderness Medicine Training Center is the only wilderness medicine provider who offers both standard and hybrid courses using teaching and learning strategies that inform one another; the result is a choice of format and pedagogy that meets your needs. While the focus of all our medical courses is expedition medicine, the information and skills learned may be directly applied to other emergency medical situations where rapid EMS and advanced medical care is not available e.g.: disaster relief, remote health care in third world countries, field tactical situations, etc. WMTC certifications remain valid for a maximum of three years with no grace period. You must be present and engaged throughout the entire course to be eligible for certification. While every effort has been made to provide the materials and instruction required for you to complete a course and become certified, we cannot guarantee your success.

Part 2 Hybrid WEMT
<

Our hybrid Wilderness EMT course is designed for experienced medical practitioners who are acting as an expedition medic or trip leader; the course is only offered as a hybrid course. Participants must hold a current NREMT certification or state EMT license (basic, intermediate, or paramedic) with patient care experience to receive certification as a WEMT. Similar to our Wilderness First Responder course, our Wilderness EMT course focuses on assessment and treatment of traumatic, environmental, and medical emergencies in a wilderness environment. Labs teach field assessment and treatment skills. Lecture during the Part 2 practical session is brief and focused on answering questions raised during simulations and case study reviews. While the focus remains on expedition medicine, the skills taught during our WEMT course may be applied directly to situations where prolonged EMS transport is unavoidable e.g.: disaster relief, SAR, rural EMS calls, etc.
The Part 2 practical session of our hybrid WEMT course is 5-days long and requires completion of the Part 1 independent study portion in order to attend. In addition to their WEMT certification, graduates will receive separate Anaphylaxis and Wilderness Adult & Child CPR and AED certifications.
To learn more about our educational pedagogy and course strategies please click here.
WMTC is not registered with CBEMS or any other CEU organization for EMTs, nurses, PAs, or physicians. If an EMT is affiliated with a licensed service, the training officer/or education department supervisor can usually approve CEUs. NREMT may grant (but is not obligated to) CEUs to EMTs who have taken a WEMT course based on topics and clock-hours and state approval (see preceding text). Nurses, PAs, and physicians can apply for CEs through their hospital's education department. Those who are not affiliated with a hospital may be eligible for CEUs and should contact their state licensing/health department for guidance.

Our WFR & WEMT Recertification course is designed to provide a thorough review of the material covered in your original course and aquaint you with any revised assessment and treatment protocols. Graduates from approved wilderness medicine schools may recertify with us by successfully completing a Recertification course or by completing a Wilderness First Aid course and passing our online WFR & WEMT Recertification test if they are currently certified or in their grace period. We will not recertify graduates of online only programs. Click here for a list of currently approved providers.
For those seeking continuing education towards their urban EMT license:
This course recertifies the wilderness portion of your WEMT certification; depending on your certification and where you live, you may be able to receive continuing education credits towards your state EMT license. We are not CAPCE approved. CAPCE and NREMT are separate organizations. CAPCE accredits continuing education for EMS professionals internationally; NREMT administers the certification examinations for EMS professionals at the various scope of practice levels. While a few states have included some wilderness protocols into their state EMS act, the vast majority of wilderness medicine certifications fall outside the EMS system. NREMT will accept CEs when an EMT is working for a state-registered service and the course work is approved by the training officer or medical director.
WMTC certifications are valid for a maximum of three years with no grace period: Check the expiration date on your card.
