The Wilderness Medicine Training Center is the only wilderness medicine provider who offers both standard and hybrid courses using teaching and learning strategies that inform one another; the result is a choice of format and pedagogy that meets your needs. While the focus of all our medical courses is expedition medicine, the information and skills learned may be directly applied to other emergency medical situations where rapid EMS and advanced medical care is not available e.g.: disaster relief, remote health care in third world countries, field tactical situations, etc. WMTC certifications remain valid for a maximum of three years with no grace period. You must be present and engaged throughout the entire course to be eligible for certification. While every effort has been made to provide the materials and instruction required for you to complete a course and become certified, we cannot guarantee your success.
To view our current course schedule, please click on a course link (or scroll down) and then click or touch the appropriate tab.

People older than 65, those with underlying health conditions, those with a compromised immune system, and those who smoke or vape are at higher risk for severe illness should they acquire COVID-19. Please discuss any risk factors with your health care provider before registering for an in-person course.

Our public YouTube channel has educational and reference videos for many of the skills taught during our courses. Check it out!

Please contact our office if you have any questions or need assistance choosing a course.

How to recertify your WFR or WEMT online during the pandemic
We are acutely aware that few recertification courses are available this fall and winter and that some WFR & WEMT graduates need their certification to work this winter and spring. To address this issue, currently certified graduates of an approved wilderness medicine provider may register for Part 1 of our WFR & WEMT Recertification course. Once they complete the online portion of the course, they will be able to download a provisional WFR or WEMT certification; the certification expires one year from the time they registered for Part 1.

To complete the certification process and receive an additional two-year certification, they must complete the Part 2 practical session before their provisional certification expires.
How to recertify your WAFA online during the pandemic
We are also aware that our WAFA graduates are having a difficult time recertifying, and that the pandemic has made it especially difficult—nearly impossible—for our Southeast Asian WAFA graduates. To address this issue, currently certified WMTC WAFA graduates register for Part 1 of our WAFA course. Once they complete the online portion of the course, they should download the completion card and email it to our office with a copy of their original WAFA certification. Upon receipt and confirmation, we will email them a provisional WAFA certification card; the provisional certification expires one year from the time they registered for Part 1.

To complete the certification process and receive an additional two-year certification, they must complete the Part 2 practical session before their provisional certification expires. If this is not possible for our Southeast Asian they may request and additional six month extension via email before their provisional certification expires for a total of 18 months.

Our Wilderness First Aid course may be the best choice for weekend campers, people taking day hikes within cell phone coverage, and those who are just looking for basic instruction. If you like it and want more, you can always come back later and take a longer, more intensive course. Our WFA course meets the Boy Scouts of America and the American Camping Association trip leader requirements.

Graduates wishing to recertify their WAFA, WFR, or WEMT using a standard WFA must pass the WFR & WEMT Recertification course online exams within two months of completing the in-person course; there is a $25 fee for the online exams.

Graduates who have completed Part 1 of our WFR & WEMT Recertification course may substitute Part 2 of the hybrid WFA for Part 2 of the WFR & WEMT Recertification course.

Graduates from approved wilderness medicine schools may recertify with us if they are currently certified or in their grace period; click here for a list of currently approved providers.

Our standard WFA course is three days long and combines in-person lecture, skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews into a single course.

Our two-part hybrid WFA course minimizes the time spent away from home or work by separating the lecture and practical skills of a standard WFA course into two separate parts. Part 1 is taught completely online via dedicated course website while the Part 2 practical session is two days long and focuses on skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews. You must complete both parts within a year to receive certification.

In addition to their WFA certification, graduates will receive a separate Epinephrine certification for the treatment of anaphylaxis. Wilderness Adult & Child CPR and AED certification is available in some courses.

Our Wilderness First Responder course is designed for outdoor professionals, those who take multi-day or longer personal trips, those who take part in high risk activities (rock climbing, whitewater paddling, mountaineering, multi-week expeditions of all kinds, etc.), and those who simply want to know more about wilderness medicine. Wilderness EMT

  • Designed for
  •  Description
  • Part 1 Hybrid WEMT
  •  Part 2 Hybrid WEMT
<
>
Our hybrid Wilderness EMT course is designed for experienced medical practitioners who are acting as an expedition medic or trip leader; the course is only offered as a hybrid course. Participants must hold a current NREMT certification or state EMT license (basic, intermediate, or paramedic) with patient care experience to receive certification as a WEMT. Similar to our Wilderness First Responder course, our Wilderness EMT course focuses on assessment and treatment of traumatic, environmental, and medical emergencies in a wilderness environment. Labs teach field assessment and treatment skills. Lecture during the Part 2 practical session is brief and focused on answering questions raised during simulations and case study reviews. While the focus remains on expedition medicine, the skills taught during our WEMT course may be applied directly to situations where prolonged EMS transport is unavoidable e.g.: disaster relief, SAR, rural EMS calls, etc.
The Part 2 practical session of our hybrid WEMT course is 5-days long and requires completion of the Part 1 independent study portion in order to attend. In addition to their WEMT certification, graduates will receive separate Anaphylaxis and Wilderness Adult & Child CPR and AED certifications.

To learn more about our educational pedagogy and course strategies please click here.

WMTC is not registered with CBEMS or any other CEU organization for EMTs, nurses, PAs, or physicians. If an EMT is affiliated with a licensed service, the training officer/or education department supervisor can usually approve CEUs. NREMT may grant (but is not obligated to) CEUs to EMTs who have taken a WEMT course based on topics and clock-hours and state approval (see preceding text). Nurses, PAs, and physicians can apply for CEs through their hospital's education department. Those who are not affiliated with a hospital may be eligible for CEUs and should contact their state licensing/health department for guidance.
