                                        WMTC Medical Courses

                                        WMTC Certifications

WMTC is a signatory to the Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder scope of practice documents endorsed by the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS). We we are an affiliate of and teach to the practice guidelines published by the WMS and to position papers published by the National Association of EMS Physicians. Our certifications are recognized by other wilderness medicine providers, insurance companies, and guide licensing boards nationwide. The high quality of our courses is undisputed and easily seen in our course materials, pedagogy, delivery methods, and the training of our instructors. While there are larger providers, there are none better. We have two course formats: Standard and our hybrid Distance Learning Project (DLP) courses. Regardless of the format WMTC certifications remain valid for a maximum of three years from the date of issue with no grace period; you must recertify before your certification expires. NOTE: that depending on an individual student's performance instructors may issue a certification for less than three years.

The Wilderness Medical Society awards Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) credits for successful completion of our WFR or WEMT courses. Please contact the WMS for details.

                                        Choosing the Right Course

We offer numerous courses in wilderness medicine and one is sure to meet your needs. Read through the brief course descriptions on the right to see what attracts your attention and the click on the link for more details and to compare syllabuses. In addition to choosing a course type — WFA, WAFA, WFR, WEMT, or Recertification — you also need to decide between a Standard or DLP format.

Please contact our office if you have any questions or need assistance choosing between a Standard or DLP course.

                                        Standard Courses

Our standard courses combine lecture, skill labs and simulations and are typically taught in a block format at a host site. Standard courses are best suited for students who learn best with an instructor present to guide and motivate them throughout the course and/or for those students who do not have the time for extensive pre-course study.

Please contact our office if you have any questions or need assistance choosing between a Standard or DLP course.

Hybrid Distance Learning Project or DLP Courses

Our DLP courses are hybrid courses designed for those who are able to study the didactic material on their own using our course textbook: “the Art & Technique of Wilderness Medicine,” our field handbook: “the Wilderness Medicine Handbook,” our case study workbook: “Case Studies in Wilderness Medicine,” and access to the course web site. DLP students must successfully complete one or more online exams prior to attending a practical session held at a host site. Access to a computer and the internet are mandatory; broadband/high speed access is required. If you like self-study, are disciplined, computer literate, and have limited time to attend a practical session, then one of our DLP courses is likely your best choice.

Prior to registering for a DLP course, please visit the course Home Page to see how it is organized. Thoroughly read the directions on the Home page and view the Lightning presentation to make sure the course meets your needs. Both the Home and Lightning Pages are open to the general public for this purpose; the remaining presentation pages are password protected. The web site password together with login information to our on-line testing site is sent to students upon registration.

                                        Wilderness First Aid
If you are a weekend camper, lead day hikes within cell phone coverage, or are just looking for basic instruction, our Wilderness First Aid course may be your best choice. If you like it and find you want more, you can always come back later and take a longer more intensive course.

                                        Wilderness Advanced First Aid

If you want a bit more than our WFA has to offer or expect to deal with potentially spine injured patients, consider our Wilderness Advanced First Aid course. Keep in mind that the majority of our WAFA graduates come back to take a full Wilderness First Responder. If you have the time, you might want to go that route.

                                        Wilderness First Responder
If you want to be an outdoor professional, take multi-day or longer personal trips, take part in high risk activities (rock climbing, whitewater paddling, mountaineering, multi-week expeditions of all kinds, etc.) or simply want to know more about wilderness medicine, take our Wilderness First Responder course. It’s the industry standard for outdoor instructors and guides.

                                        Wilderness EMT Module
If you are a current EMT or health care professional (physician, physician assistant, nurse, etc.) and want to learn about wilderness medicine, you’ll want to take our DLP Wilderness EMT Module.

                                        Recertification
If you are looking to recertify a current WFR or WEMT you can take a Recertification course. If you want to spend more time on the practical skills, consider our DLP Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT. You can also recertify  by taking a Wilderness First Aid course and passing the online exams.
