General
Information
We offer two basic course delivery options: Standard courses and Distance Learning Project (DLP) courses.
Our Standard courses are completely taught on-site; morning didactic presentations transfer easily into afternoon and day long practical sessions. Our Standard courses are best suited for students who meet one or more of the following conditions: prefer minimal course preparation, prefer listening to an instructor lecture rather than study on their own, do not have the discipline and/or the academic aptitude required for effective distance learning, and do not have easy access to a computer and the internet.
Our Distance Learning Project (DLP) courses have three distinct components: DLP course students MUST successfully complete an academic distance learning component and on-line testing before attending the on-site practical session. The distance learning portion of the course utilizes course appropriate texts and our animated instructional DVD. Our DLP courses are best suited for students who meet all of the following criteria: have limited vacation time or prefer to use their vacation time in another way, have the discipline and academic aptitude required for effective distance learning, enjoy and have the time for in-depth study outside of their regular commitments, have access to a reliable computer with a DVD drive and internet access, and who possess a valid e-mail address. Click here for details about our DLP courses.
Use
the file header to see specific course descriptions or browse
down the list at your leisure. Prospective students should
download and read our Student
Booklet. The booklet is designed to help prepare students
for their course and to maximize their learning experience.

The
Wilderness EMT Module has been designed to meet the
needs of experienced medical practitioners who are
practicing their skills as ski patrollers, SAR team
members, expedition medics, etc. Participants must
be a licensed EMT (basic, intermediate, or paramedic)
with patient care experience. Nurses, physicians,
or veterinarians may also attend but will receive
a completion card in lieu of certification and may
be eligible for CEU. Similar to a WFR, the WEMT Module
focuses on assessment and treatment of traumatic,
environmental, and medical emergencies in a wilderness
environment. Labs teach students the skills they need
to improvise in the field. Lectures are brief and
focused on the need-to-know information. An effort
is made to keep the course active. The skills taught
during the WEMT Module may be applied directly to
situations where prolonged EMS transport is unavoidable
(e.g.: disaster relief, interface with local SAR units,
rural EMS calls, etc.)

The
Wilderness Advanced First Aid course is designed for
the recreational public. All WAFA courses focus on
minor and major trauma, selected environmental topics,
and medical emergencies. While the WFR is recommended
for professional guides, instructors, and expedition
leaders, the WAFA meets most state licensing requirements
for first aid certification. The course includes WMTC
adult CPR certification.

Our
Wilderness First Aid workshops are designed to introduce
participants to the concepts of medical care in a
wilderness setting. The course focuses on
Basic Life Support skills, minor trauma and selected
environmental topics, the spine assessment and
ruling out process, allergic & toxic reactions. As with all our courses, the majority of time is spent in hands-on skills practice and simulations; lecture in the Standard courses
is limited to basic anatomy and physiology. There
is no formal testing in our standard WFA; our DLP WFA, like all our DLP courses, requires successful completion of an on-line test prior to attending the practical session. A completion card is given to
each participant at the end of the course. Our WFA courses are
accepted by the American Camping Association (ACA)
for camp programs that are close to standard EMS assistance and by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) including Philmont Scout Ranch.
While the course includes instruction in adult CPR
techniques, due to time constraints CPR certification
is not included.
Our Standard or DLP WFA course may be used to recertify WAFA, WFR, and WEMT certifications. To receive certification graduates must complete the on-line Review & Recertification exam; there is a $25 fee for the on-line exam for those taking our Standard WFA; the exam fee is included in the DLP WFA tuition.

Our
Review & Recertification course is designed for
graduates of our Wilderness Advanced First Aid course,
our Wilderness First Responder course, and our Wilderness
EMT module. It is offered at various times throughout
the year. Graduates from all courses are encouraged
to attend on a yearly basis to maintain and polish
their skills. Our Review & Recertification course
focuses on the trauma and environmental syllabi. Over
60% of the course is hands-on skill review, role plays,
and simulations. This is especially important for
those who do not work as primary care rescuers. Prior
to your course you should thoroughly review your original
course materials; there will NOT be enough time in
your course to cover all the material presented in
your original course...yet you are still responsible
for knowing it. If this is your first WMTC course
you should purchase and study the
Art and Technique of Wilderness Medicine prior
to your course. If you are a WMTC graduate and already
have a copy of our text, check for updates
by clicking on this link. The course includes WMTC Wilderness CPR & AED certification.
All Standard Review & Recertification students should download and complete our pre-course practice exam; complete directions are in the file.
Alternatively WEMT, WFR, and WAFA graduates may choose to take our 24 hour Wilderness First Aid workshop (WFA) and complete the on-line Review & Recertification exam; there is a $25 fee for the on-line exam for those taking our Standard WFA; the exam fee is included in the DLP WFA tuition.
Graduates from other wilderness medicine providers are welcome to recertify with us if they are currently certified and the wilderness portion of their original WEMT is at least 64 hours long, their original WFR is at least 72 hours, or their WAFA is at least 40 hours. All review
students must bring a copy of their certification
with them to their course. If your certificate or certification card does NOT contain the course title: Wilderness EMT, Wilderness First Responder, or Wilderness Advanced First Aid, the number of course hours, and an expiration or course completion date, you will need to supply a course syllabus that shows this together with a breakdown of the course topics. Please contact the WMTC office with any questions.
Although we encourage
WMTC graduates to recertify with us, we do not require
it. We understand that some of our students may occasionally
wish to recertify with another company. To facilitate
this process we have direct reciprocity with Wilderness Medicine Outfitters
(WMO), First Lead, Aerie Wilderness Medicine, Desert Mountain Medicine, Stonehearth
Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO), Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS (WMI), and Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA). WMTC graduates wishing to recertify with WMA must take their their 3-day Challenge Course. WMTC graduates wishing to recertify with one of the other listed providers must take their Recertification course, not a WFA.
All these organizations will permit a WMTC graduate
to recertify directly with them and will issue a new
certification upon successful completion of one of
their recertification courses. WMTC graduates should
be aware that there are minor differences between
each wilderness medicine provider and are encouraged
to purchase and read the text appropriate to the recertification
course they plan to attend prior to the course.

Wilderness
CPR & AED |
| |
| |
 |
While
the skills of CPR (chest compressions and ventilations)
remain the same regardless of where they are used,
the protocols surrounding their use change slightly
to accommodate the wilderness environment. This is
especially true when the rescuer is confronted with
a drowning or avalanche victim with severe hypothermia.
We offer training and certification in wilderness
adult CPR, child CPR, and infant CPR. Since AEDs (automated
external defibrillators) are lighter, smaller, and
increasingly more field friendly, we also offer training
and certification in their (AED) use.
Wilderness adult CPR
training and certification is standard in our WAFA,
WFR, and Review courses. Wilderness AED training and
certification is standard in our WFR and Review
courses.
Additional wilderness
CPR modules can be added to any of our courses or
taught as a "stand-alone" workshop; contact
our office for details.
WMTC Wilderness CPR & AED certifications remain
valid for two years.
