the Wilderness Medicine Handbook
Second Edition
The second edition of the Wilderness Medicine Handbook is a full color version of our text book edited for field use. It is small enough to carry in your back pocket or life jacket. The 4.25 x 5.5 x 3/8 inch 140 page handbook is printed on waterproof/tearproof paper and is almost indestructible. A plastic coil binding permits the handbook to remain open to the selected page. Similar to its parent text, problems are broken down according to their mechanism of injury (MOI): trauma, environmental, or medical with decision making indexes preceding each major section. Treatments are highlighted for fast identification. While the handbook briefly explains each problem, it does not delve deeply into anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, or basic life support skills; users are expected to have a working knowledge of wilderness medicine. Wilderness Medicine Playing Cards
If you like cards (and who doesn’t), you’ll like this poker deck. Each of the 54 cards (four suits of 13 cards each plus two Jokers) has a brief case study and answer. For fun, the Kings are ice climbers; the Queens, skiers; and the Jack's, canoe paddlers. The back of the card features a colorful and updated rendition of the Vitruvian man in our logo. We've already experimented with modifying a number of classic card games to include the case studies (think Go Fish, War, etc.).

Staff trainers have been using the cards to review their program's medical policies and train staff by playing a game of Wilderness Medicine "Jeopardy" using the case studies in deck as questions and answers for the game. This strategy works great as part of a staff meeting or an evening session during a field training.
