Properly applied, the dressing should remain in place for days and you can watch the wound heal through the dressing. In most cases, there is no need to apply gauze or an ointment under the dressing. If you decide you need gauze, saturate it with a petroleum-based ointment and make sure there is at least a half-inch of exposed skin for the dressing to adhere to; use Tincture of Benzoin to help the dressing adhere better. The dressing may be applied over steri-strips.
