ALL Wilderness Medicine Training Center certifications (including Wilderness CPR & AED) are valid for three years from the date of issue with no grace period. This means that you must recertify BEFORE you expire to remain certified. If your certification expires, you will need to take the entire course again to renew your original certification. It is your responsibility to keep track of your expiration date. While our office keeps track of certification data for four years, we do not send out re-certification reminders. If you are certified by another wilderness medicine provider, you will need to contact them to find out if they offer a grace period or not.
While most providers will allow you to recertify via a Wilderness First Aid course, Recertification course curriculum is faster paced, more in-depth, and covers more advanced topics than that of a Wilderness First Aid course and you will receive a better education if you recertify through a Recertification Course (rather than a Wilderness First Aid). Wilderness EMT graduates must have a current EMT certification to recertify the wilderness portion of their EMT. Wilderness First Aid graduates seeking recertification simply repeat their original course.
Direct reciprocity means that the provider you take your recertification course from will issue your certification. It also means that you will fall under that company's recertification policy. This can be confusing if your "new" provider's policies are different from those of your previous provider. Remember to ask what the provider's recertification policy is every time you recertify! The Wilderness Medicine Training Center has direct reciprocity with all the major wilderness medicine providers as well as many of the smaller ones. We are the only wilderness medicine provider who offers both standard and hybrid Recertification courses. If your Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT certification has expired, consider recertifying via our hybrid DLP Wilderness First Responder or DLP Wilderness EMT course. As a past graduate you'll move quickly through the didactic material and testing prior to attending an intense 5-day practical session.
